GEORGIA, 8000 VINTAGES
It has been a long time the world recognized Georgia as a cradle of viticulture and winemaking. The history of wine began in Neolithic times, and the clearest traces of viticulture have been found on the territory of Georgia. The grape seeds which are found in settlement of Dangreuli Gora in a valley close to Marneuli (a town in the Lower Kartli region south of Tbilisi), belongs to the VI century millennium BC and whose morphological and ampelographical characteristics were identical to those of Vitis vinifera sativa. In the ancient period was established the method which the Georgian winemakers use activity nowadays also, this is an ancient Georgian method of winemaking to make the wine in Qvevri which was entered in the nonmaterial heritage list by UNESCO in 2013. The archetype of Qvevri was created in Neolithic age in Georgia as yet. (An ancient wine vessel found on Mt. Khrami, VI-Vth millennia B.C. Decorated with bunches of grapes.) and winemaking was developed for millennia and became a constant tradition.
CRADLE OF THE WORLD VITICULTURE
In the old days, Georgian wine was exported to Ancient Greece, Rome, the Persian Empire and Jerusalem. Foreign travelers praised Colchian and Kakhetian wines, and would sometimes describe the traditions associated with winemaking and feasting in Georgia. There was existed also a great monastery winemaking tradition also in Georgia. The wine cellar of the Nekresi Monastery, for example, occupied around 200m2 and contained five wine presses capable of crushing 10 tons of grapes at a time. The same could be said of the wine cellars of the Ikalto, Gelati, Alaverdi and Vardzia Monasteries. This country is characterized by its large diversity of grape varieties (more than 500) and vinification, which led winemakers to evolve in winemaking approach, and still pursuing today. Wine takes one of the main places in the Georgian daily culture. Georgia was a host country of the World Congress of Wine and Vine OIV 2010. Georgian wines are unique, they have original characters, with a complex aromatic expression, different tannin structures, and specific flavours. The Georgian wine has become more popular during the last years, tradition method (Qvevri Amber Wine), unique features of Georgian varieties and Georgian culinary.
